The Stylish Sleazy
World of Giallo Films
Black gloves and a trench coat. Straight razors and knives. Models and photographers and musicians. Sex and sleaze and outrageous fashion. And violence. So much violence. Like film noir, it’s difficult to pin down exactly what makes a film giallo, as opposed to simply being a murder mystery or horror film. Is it a genre? A style? An attitude? Depends on who you ask, and at the end of the day, like the confused protagonist of one of the films, we are still left wanting for some elusive clue that will tie it all together. And in the end, even if that were to happen, even if we were to figure it out, the solution to the mystery wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying as the meandering journey to get there.
